This was a free pattern I found on the net at <a href="https://pin.it/3lgZfzk">https://pin.it/3lgZfzk</a>. I am amazed at the generosity of people who create and share beautiful patterns. And then I found the pattern for the 3 wise men! I think I enjoyed crocheting the donkey the best….</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEghi-Fuz4hDjmAVUTyllnzSnqjxYDwc-z9yFyJE1iqNrYTrCHCsn3E6sWjOpX3vDHQFMduNf8Lu_ciEY0X9CHjXqbq-24Xl13i3vV4fpjx-Vej2qZ-368_vhWoVNk2xwKs5JU5ytTi5JHLGqAfSp3DhIXeTXdsh67iB9hlC9Fhblx_0n6nvZgrnqaZCvA" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="1440" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEghi-Fuz4hDjmAVUTyllnzSnqjxYDwc-z9yFyJE1iqNrYTrCHCsn3E6sWjOpX3vDHQFMduNf8Lu_ciEY0X9CHjXqbq-24Xl13i3vV4fpjx-Vej2qZ-368_vhWoVNk2xwKs5JU5ytTi5JHLGqAfSp3DhIXeTXdsh67iB9hlC9Fhblx_0n6nvZgrnqaZCvA" width="300" /></a></div><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiBGHLYHdHFkYpILif0CjugC-pnsIJSexojNfDNiemK4VApT2EcKebtmqsCV4O12N8i9NxqmL3sJVcLlwWOwRssywipuSlWmC0-tBjIKAqZLjQurNGxdlvFVqCvsBv7sFh8R8u7xWV8n07hy01k9fZoYYIImMkPkGeyzQ1A2hMD-6WyYG9bESApLYH3UQ" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="1440" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiBGHLYHdHFkYpILif0CjugC-pnsIJSexojNfDNiemK4VApT2EcKebtmqsCV4O12N8i9NxqmL3sJVcLlwWOwRssywipuSlWmC0-tBjIKAqZLjQurNGxdlvFVqCvsBv7sFh8R8u7xWV8n07hy01k9fZoYYIImMkPkGeyzQ1A2hMD-6WyYG9bESApLYH3UQ" width="300" /></a></div><br />And then there are the crochet baubles….. using up scrap balls from my yarn stash <p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh2WjoOJDkIy00Xbx-sluFyf_cmfx-CgTrdlYrsUqwHXmlESG8Qng9GVyQcTeB2n9ujCrkPKfahbju6pw9-pJ8lqMIlfjJnFc8WyQRRH2Hov6KyY3h7ycN0oWz7ZFVHgiMdnhBW0dYUzxTFBw0uxHL0sQYsxFfmXs_hvFdUKFbj7g7_xY1glAnc96Bp_A" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="768" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh2WjoOJDkIy00Xbx-sluFyf_cmfx-CgTrdlYrsUqwHXmlESG8Qng9GVyQcTeB2n9ujCrkPKfahbju6pw9-pJ8lqMIlfjJnFc8WyQRRH2Hov6KyY3h7ycN0oWz7ZFVHgiMdnhBW0dYUzxTFBw0uxHL0sQYsxFfmXs_hvFdUKFbj7g7_xY1glAnc96Bp_A" width="180" /></a></div><br />And finally the gnomes…..one planned for each family this year….<p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiSamcVcTE7_6is7_BwdByr8dR6EouIEYPVOgfa3-fImyNX8xNJCfGBh3NsLCHEL3QbWFqbS0pa8RhEw95adKPOR4evyzQ9bo2vdaFs6Ta5iNvijl_8wCVpUcD1xvcl6uYclTmqCOFRfZWtZVPTvsU04VrkLesJK4QUUYO1-UC27kQvo1WeJW2DMHKi4A" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiSamcVcTE7_6is7_BwdByr8dR6EouIEYPVOgfa3-fImyNX8xNJCfGBh3NsLCHEL3QbWFqbS0pa8RhEw95adKPOR4evyzQ9bo2vdaFs6Ta5iNvijl_8wCVpUcD1xvcl6uYclTmqCOFRfZWtZVPTvsU04VrkLesJK4QUUYO1-UC27kQvo1WeJW2DMHKi4A" width="180" /></a></div><br /><br /></div><p></p>brincrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10074166093212805661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4462896445097820938.post-23354716151961944502022-08-27T03:28:00.001-07:002022-08-27T03:28:11.688-07:00Crochet doll<p> I’ve always wanted to crochet a doll. I fell in love with the whole idea of using thread to paint! My first experiment was a portrait of Ella, my daughter Nishka’s rescued and very beloved boxer. She was old and died and since she had been a huge part of all our lives, the grief was intense. In the embroidering of her portrait, I found a way to preserve her memory and cope with my sadness </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaV8ihZwj16fW_ofkBgyskH9ufSOX78VbWWjV0CSLTFsfEuapJzTRYU8W6RGwK2pM_wDqk8xjLAh8kn7IXFOzzvLSIpYMt3sAPPX8O1kO6bo4hmuszQqbklCDiwNAte5epwEgbXxdehG5YWA9KXfmuxFPU8OwFtDtj6-swOvc3PEYZU-78b2JUNo5Twg/s640/1EC0D132-F0D5-4B90-97FC-480D24B4C228.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaV8ihZwj16fW_ofkBgyskH9ufSOX78VbWWjV0CSLTFsfEuapJzTRYU8W6RGwK2pM_wDqk8xjLAh8kn7IXFOzzvLSIpYMt3sAPPX8O1kO6bo4hmuszQqbklCDiwNAte5epwEgbXxdehG5YWA9KXfmuxFPU8OwFtDtj6-swOvc3PEYZU-78b2JUNo5Twg/s320/1EC0D132-F0D5-4B90-97FC-480D24B4C228.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div><p>Malhar is where I live, an eco friendly settlement a little outside Bangalore city. During the lockdown it was more peaceful than it normally is and there was not even a remote echo of traffic sounds or anything that did not come from nature. The bird and insect life suddenly increased, plants grew wild and life took on another dimension……and through all the horrors of what was happening around me, suddenly there was also a sense of calm and peace. </p><p>I decided to embroider a series on the birds I see in Malhar….so far I have completed 4, the green bee eater, the Indian blue kingfisher, the spotted owlet and the common sparrow. Two more to go, which I hope to get done by Christmas! </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxSF75nr-hViuXdvRz5KIgctlewZQB4qzlJQOS5s9VXUoRv87h4NrY8s1Rwea0mRHRzD9HKd-a23rX8uzoRL1y2DT_Mp8ccloBpktGJPemi-YuOkwXLzNJfWbqZTAbA5ox61Va0foxPGvqcQbjNnjdi-D3PMDsOud5P1SLSfnK_noKLWnf42aeKr25hA/s640/42B1B1D6-6F62-430B-A1A2-62ECF4AA56E9.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="618" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxSF75nr-hViuXdvRz5KIgctlewZQB4qzlJQOS5s9VXUoRv87h4NrY8s1Rwea0mRHRzD9HKd-a23rX8uzoRL1y2DT_Mp8ccloBpktGJPemi-YuOkwXLzNJfWbqZTAbA5ox61Va0foxPGvqcQbjNnjdi-D3PMDsOud5P1SLSfnK_noKLWnf42aeKr25hA/s320/42B1B1D6-6F62-430B-A1A2-62ECF4AA56E9.jpeg" width="309" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwk6GdrLJeBuEt2nKEjCNRNE0bQ-WEBnnRP5MjPzWUpqmEak8QQkCbcfKamrtYBgEHLDFqhK70qvSP_8qBCUxQB71J0td2qaWMxMEALW2XgrH6HhQ-w3SfdgBQ20ub2QTXiD0lCEjhvwo3pAlf-1ltUIrdggu30zAeHQdQVhyguP72CFzdY-uTV1N6wA/s640/923EF127-D3EC-4D3D-9626-28E5F52C81E4.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="567" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwk6GdrLJeBuEt2nKEjCNRNE0bQ-WEBnnRP5MjPzWUpqmEak8QQkCbcfKamrtYBgEHLDFqhK70qvSP_8qBCUxQB71J0td2qaWMxMEALW2XgrH6HhQ-w3SfdgBQ20ub2QTXiD0lCEjhvwo3pAlf-1ltUIrdggu30zAeHQdQVhyguP72CFzdY-uTV1N6wA/s320/923EF127-D3EC-4D3D-9626-28E5F52C81E4.jpeg" width="284" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9q5qT2kd33B2kuMg0E2mzS_1t0-DS4sO5wVfyPW3SizL-mxOy67AVcbaSCiCk0MjJ72Au0xEJ-ybshMfnHMM5KOoW7Y-MH5rGU1QWbYYFtTgDvXVNvB99ua3L1ICTKqoqh9SrCoouq-TGHAZ7LwVp5U5s1jYKYi1c5exxzvbYEpdfJamHqXL1D8IThQ/s1746/4873E828-AC4D-4205-B3D0-B2998AD727F5.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1746" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9q5qT2kd33B2kuMg0E2mzS_1t0-DS4sO5wVfyPW3SizL-mxOy67AVcbaSCiCk0MjJ72Au0xEJ-ybshMfnHMM5KOoW7Y-MH5rGU1QWbYYFtTgDvXVNvB99ua3L1ICTKqoqh9SrCoouq-TGHAZ7LwVp5U5s1jYKYi1c5exxzvbYEpdfJamHqXL1D8IThQ/s320/4873E828-AC4D-4205-B3D0-B2998AD727F5.jpeg" width="282" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9bNe2t43j7r8A969XByTAvuYCkjFVkmMAvYpeVmzEleIKsNX6e8HctMs2h9xaQ3nl_VxsPYADxAh6PUhHR8hJA7VH0Vj_kH4C6_g6XiyTHCy-U68s2Kd8hdX-vn6WkKqBbK6K1MXwCZ56TGm3cv5tdtKN4UJeU__KRsouPjRy0CRr1T1Q6qV4ZngnHg/s640/FCDCA60A-6A2F-4B58-9648-3802037BF1E4.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="592" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9bNe2t43j7r8A969XByTAvuYCkjFVkmMAvYpeVmzEleIKsNX6e8HctMs2h9xaQ3nl_VxsPYADxAh6PUhHR8hJA7VH0Vj_kH4C6_g6XiyTHCy-U68s2Kd8hdX-vn6WkKqBbK6K1MXwCZ56TGm3cv5tdtKN4UJeU__KRsouPjRy0CRr1T1Q6qV4ZngnHg/s320/FCDCA60A-6A2F-4B58-9648-3802037BF1E4.jpeg" width="296" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>brincrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10074166093212805661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4462896445097820938.post-48492525558884561912020-07-01T02:30:00.001-07:002020-07-01T03:10:47.112-07:00Kawadi WorkshopAs part of an activity for the Nool Koota group (the name for a group of us from our community who used to meet once a week to share skills and learn about crochet and knitting and a sewing, before Covid took over our lives!!) I had offered to teach the making of a Kawadi quilt. I had attended a workshop a couple of years ago and had loved the experience. The Kawadi quilts originated from the Siddi tribe of women from a North Karnataka. The details are in an earlier post given below. <div><a href="https://embroideringmytale.blogspot.com/2016/02/back-to-quilting.html" id="id_84c0_ddcd_2d69_165a">https://embroideringmytale.blogspot.com/2016/02/back-to-quilting.html</a></div><div>Since we are all social distancing at the moment we decided to do this virtually. </div><div>It was a couple freaky fun sessions. Its been over a year since I posted anything....Life happens I guess! Another attempt in trying to maintain my blog. Hopefully with better luck this time!<br />
I was looking at a crochet blog the other day, and was amazed to see the beautiful use of colour in the stuff the lady crocheted. Her inspiration is nature, she says and had posted some beautiful products alongside her inspirational pictures.<br />
It really struck a chord in me....there have been umpteen times that I have tried to think of what colours to use when crocheting something, be it a blanket or an afghan or a scarf or hat....and got stuck, or started something and ripped it midway because the colours just didnt go well together, or left it the way it was and really not been happy with the finished product.<br />
She lives in the west, so she had her own unique sense of colours from her natural surrounding, often muted and subtle. But I live in a different part of the world, and our colours in India are so much brighter, as our trees and plants are more vibrant and bright.<br />
So I have started collecting colours and am amazed at how incredible the mixing, the matching the synergy that exists in colours form leaves, and flowers and trees and the seasons as they unfold.<br />

As amazing are her quilts, is Jenny herself, a generous and gifted teacher, who shares her knowledge and skills with complete honesty, encourages you to the extent that you feel you are a master! For me free motion quilting has always been a challenge, and something I was petrified to try....what if I ruin my pieced work!!!! But Jenny made it simple, shared a systematic way of us doing it and at the end of the 3 days, I felt confident and kept wondering why it had taken me so long!! <div>The preparations for the workshop started a couple of months before we actually met. She sent mails giving details of what she was going to do and encouraged questions, which she answered in great detail. Finally the days arrived and 14 of us met in Mumbai to experience an exhilarating and exhausting 3 days! </div><div>We learnt how to create our template, increase the size and get tracing done onto the backing fabric, trace out the outline on fusible web and then start putting the pieces. It was like painting with fabric! <div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi23Adup_KF4ZxvmGV0-gV2BPmt_zShDlt8qdJYs9dEr6nOyyxfxtmqz9ZCso1W1rmRTaCecpIaDYXeYPfzH3jDWEa7IixxK3Kvz6tBSksB3i7HJh72ZKptmrqiHWABWpcCLyXv4SAONp8Z/s640/blogger-image--2029761212.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi23Adup_KF4ZxvmGV0-gV2BPmt_zShDlt8qdJYs9dEr6nOyyxfxtmqz9ZCso1W1rmRTaCecpIaDYXeYPfzH3jDWEa7IixxK3Kvz6tBSksB3i7HJh72ZKptmrqiHWABWpcCLyXv4SAONp8Z/s640/blogger-image--2029761212.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFJNctuBcOBWhXUO3g5BqLLY7cZLAc5PS5erpza6rwcS5zcoPiR3DBJAMCxAx1N0lfFFAVmiipNwm91VhMUD7HKTexubqMLjkghL1F5fD2kOphXBeXhCUGPAy3StEa5a8QY10MyKr3LP8F/s640/blogger-image-296144015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFJNctuBcOBWhXUO3g5BqLLY7cZLAc5PS5erpza6rwcS5zcoPiR3DBJAMCxAx1N0lfFFAVmiipNwm91VhMUD7HKTexubqMLjkghL1F5fD2kOphXBeXhCUGPAy3StEa5a8QY10MyKr3LP8F/s640/blogger-image-296144015.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4a3lYCnB4elESI1jwqizNxBsyEHER0xtHAoOrcZHHEycHV257V-6tIsxQodGThkpFtXolGo_EVo9Q32C8MMfUeuLc-WwyvZb3CBMIPY85ME4S0g8ozVh4y93BWnlLevbp8QfE_h-ElpoY/s640/blogger-image-1721603142.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4a3lYCnB4elESI1jwqizNxBsyEHER0xtHAoOrcZHHEycHV257V-6tIsxQodGThkpFtXolGo_EVo9Q32C8MMfUeuLc-WwyvZb3CBMIPY85ME4S0g8ozVh4y93BWnlLevbp8QfE_h-ElpoY/s640/blogger-image-1721603142.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEildDCSUKHz_XNoC-zi5f1KDstFR-tt1c0LYdkKfsYaW-XA7m2hueTC4UpV48qB70r_V4W6wCwdXt68UlJ9dfSu77LxRJ5bYc-dLl4rCHqWfkKoKerZx8LzOgz8GeV7_tUaOrcqLgKWR_1l/s640/blogger-image-809624765.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEildDCSUKHz_XNoC-zi5f1KDstFR-tt1c0LYdkKfsYaW-XA7m2hueTC4UpV48qB70r_V4W6wCwdXt68UlJ9dfSu77LxRJ5bYc-dLl4rCHqWfkKoKerZx8LzOgz8GeV7_tUaOrcqLgKWR_1l/s640/blogger-image-809624765.jpg"></a></div></div>brincrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10074166093212805661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4462896445097820938.post-64500365061799277862016-06-12T20:19:00.001-07:002016-06-12T20:19:23.310-07:00The Cockeral is finally done! <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
It's finally done!!!!!! I actually finally had the guts to try free option quilting and finished quilting a top of a quilt I made 3 years ago!!!! As a 60th birthday present my family gave me a very special gift....a week's residential workshop, learning to quilt with Karen Sengel, a wonderfully talented quilter who lives in Chiangmai in Thailand! She specialised in a technique developed by Ruth McDowell, another very well known American quilter, which is completely pieced and machine quilted. I have given the link to my earlier blog post incase anyone is interested in checking out the process.<br />
<br />

<br />
I like using local Indian woven fabrics, and the problem with that is that they are all of varying weights. This creates huge issues while quilting as the fabric stretches. I did try to stabilise it with starch, but it was still difficult. Didn't make it easier that I am a hand quilter, and free motion quilting proves to be a challenge! I am really pleased with the final result....although the FMQ needs a lot more practice. I like the fact that I have caught the superior expression of the cockerel!!<br />

Once the pieces were placed and ironed on the top was ready! Then I made a sandwich with batting and a backing fabric and quilted it.....using the thread to paint with and shade the picture! I have only just stared free motion quilting as I prefer hand sewing, so the stitches are defunetely quite uneven! But on the whole I really enjoyed making this! <div>
In case any of you are interested log on to The Quilting Acedemy......they have a host of excellent classes!<br /><div>

Nikhil, who's all of 3, is in love with Spider-Man and Dinos! The pattern is by Abby Glassenberg. The original was made with fleece, but I made it in cotton. Nikhil lives in Hanoi and can't see him cuddling a fleece toy in the heat! So I used a nice Batik! He loved it! He says the colors make Dino, a magical creature!<br />

Three full days of working without rulers as we learnt to measure use our 'haath' (hand and palm) and 'ungli' (finger) and make totally accurate corners and motifs! A new understanding of colours and a unique variety of combinations and so much more. Akka is a generous and natural teacher and shares her skills with ease! Nirmalla Akka can't read or write as she is from a remote tribal village in North Karnataka! But what a talented lady! </div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Using an old sari for the base, working without rulers or precise measurements, no pinning, using thick cotton thread and a very big needle to sew, very sore fingers, was all part of the experience! I looked with some awe and a great deal of respect as Nirmala akka put together a beautiful piece of sewing, tearing strips of cloth, old and new, making the traditional motifs for the chariot, or kites, or the 'ramjhula'. Her sewing lines were exact as were the size of the stitches as she placed and fixed small pieces of fabrics one on top of the other. My quilt is 5 layers thick! </span></div></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_OpBhKKjJIlu8CNrj2F5dPhWDrO2tNPZXGNahwVb-b73K2vUQ7J02G3r5dnDCO_uyq0zfqlEtjpR2HIEV0LkgrFuNzCfmJ9QzQRKV4CcUsnTahgMlycoJa5tfZt_o1W8C55mavwyI4yUh/s640/blogger-image-808277413.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_OpBhKKjJIlu8CNrj2F5dPhWDrO2tNPZXGNahwVb-b73K2vUQ7J02G3r5dnDCO_uyq0zfqlEtjpR2HIEV0LkgrFuNzCfmJ9QzQRKV4CcUsnTahgMlycoJa5tfZt_o1W8C55mavwyI4yUh/s640/blogger-image-808277413.jpg"></a></div><br></span></div><div>There is a system and science to this as can be seen from the back of the quilt! Love the bright colours, besides the fact that I used up many of my extra balls of yarn. <div>Mummy died recently and I find crocheting quietly on my own, in the peace and comfort of my wonderful home, gives me space to come to terms with the grief of losing my mother. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgScEUZ1V0bpiB1KXuhqkkxoxv4taQ72PhqFbTWa9HEg_ZiQ4bZdrqQxE1UPhnn5gXDULMWurTRWqOWSe-Y63AeeaNzEZuuyI9HrYYzng9Theyz3r3ULb_fHo77x-0vF8TcCBtNLr9BujTA/s640/blogger-image-1297425173.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgScEUZ1V0bpiB1KXuhqkkxoxv4taQ72PhqFbTWa9HEg_ZiQ4bZdrqQxE1UPhnn5gXDULMWurTRWqOWSe-Y63AeeaNzEZuuyI9HrYYzng9Theyz3r3ULb_fHo77x-0vF8TcCBtNLr9BujTA/s640/blogger-image-1297425173.jpg"></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgScEUZ1V0bpiB1KXuhqkkxoxv4taQ72PhqFbTWa9HEg_ZiQ4bZdrqQxE1UPhnn5gXDULMWurTRWqOWSe-Y63AeeaNzEZuuyI9HrYYzng9Theyz3r3ULb_fHo77x-0vF8TcCBtNLr9BujTA/s640/blogger-image-1297425173.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXsFxykt3wZqYbSIXLf5pSQCMveGqASGEKlSj3SU2M-MovZaq6Yoy3kPdK7wJXFCVUySM_1AXHSU1T8tpJHj2YazE1njb9areIlzuYvkFoSbA3mmZvnoRNE6mRFFDiKVWHnN7wwvCPcTes/s640/blogger-image--851009827.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXsFxykt3wZqYbSIXLf5pSQCMveGqASGEKlSj3SU2M-MovZaq6Yoy3kPdK7wJXFCVUySM_1AXHSU1T8tpJHj2YazE1njb9areIlzuYvkFoSbA3mmZvnoRNE6mRFFDiKVWHnN7wwvCPcTes/s640/blogger-image--851009827.jpg"></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6XRs8GzIKvRgTBo9im8UZTVAllDiBvOtvgef5LUUChJXNeIZJWQIv4ibO2INraiVcpF_Avrxe3V2HdMxa9xJ6A2hBdzMFApvOjc9O7W6R-7OwJv2w_WqLNWtC4wSdJEtbGHYJX64W4jR9/s640/blogger-image--1882002419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6XRs8GzIKvRgTBo9im8UZTVAllDiBvOtvgef5LUUChJXNeIZJWQIv4ibO2INraiVcpF_Avrxe3V2HdMxa9xJ6A2hBdzMFApvOjc9O7W6R-7OwJv2w_WqLNWtC4wSdJEtbGHYJX64W4jR9/s640/blogger-image--1882002419.jpg"></a></div><br></div>brincrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10074166093212805661noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4462896445097820938.post-51371123853346198682015-12-14T05:24:00.000-08:002015-12-15T05:13:32.608-08:00Lots of Crochet!<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Yet another attempt at trying to update my blog! FaceBook seems so much easier and immediate, sine people respond immediately. But am making an effort to keep this going. I have made this coat for Nafisa as a gift for her time away in Spain. The idea of making it was terrific and exciting. I chose all the wool in Paris when I was there and was so eager to start. The pattern turned out to be a nightmare as there were so many many mistakes in it. Towards the end, I stopped enjoying it and just plodded along finishing it. But the end result is great and the look on her face when she got it, made up for all the trouble. <div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5CDwAfOOs4riFt18cNC5-nmYvLPh_R4_lnIXHGS66FlnXWGBuhyphenhyphenJaCg7AVmNcmjmftCOZ1ZMiYOMsciS-D_J5vhaCD_6j3i5AneJZGVNpXeO1lfheJAqfGvs31WyXW6WECik1oBjBpu0R/s640/blogger-image-1343117200.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5CDwAfOOs4riFt18cNC5-nmYvLPh_R4_lnIXHGS66FlnXWGBuhyphenhyphenJaCg7AVmNcmjmftCOZ1ZMiYOMsciS-D_J5vhaCD_6j3i5AneJZGVNpXeO1lfheJAqfGvs31WyXW6WECik1oBjBpu0R/s640/blogger-image-1343117200.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTDIWezsA8aVG6tkGsAS0cyJohIHiel1YxlbviCHE5mR7qt8NPy8nPtqUCbEFCi8SG4hted-owH8QO5gcPGYsF5JOMNgDMQK3jVj5a6H72o4lThakBoJwrhw7Qb3G9bEKJKnBVqvI3sBdo/s640/blogger-image-882016582.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTDIWezsA8aVG6tkGsAS0cyJohIHiel1YxlbviCHE5mR7qt8NPy8nPtqUCbEFCi8SG4hted-owH8QO5gcPGYsF5JOMNgDMQK3jVj5a6H72o4lThakBoJwrhw7Qb3G9bEKJKnBVqvI3sBdo/s640/blogger-image-882016582.jpg"></a></div><br></div>brincrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10074166093212805661noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4462896445097820938.post-78639195085811319672015-01-25T21:31:00.002-08:002015-01-25T21:31:30.959-08:00Owl cushion<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

Lots of crochet has been happening! I seem to have got myself into a frenzy of wanting to crochet non stop! Possibly because I came across a wonderful blog by a generous and charming person called Dedri http://www.lookatwhatimade.net. I used her free pattern to make Rafa a puzzle ball!<br />

Sufi said she wanted the dress that Cinderella wore for her ball, she said it had to be blue, showed me a picture on FaceTime! 'It has to come all the way to the ground and cover my feet' she said. Bangalore being a new and unfamiliar city, Viveck and I went exploring down the many lanes off Commercial street to find the fabric.....finally we did and I made her the blue princess dress!<br />

One of my New Year resolutions was to update my blog and keep it updated! We are almost at the end of January, and I have only just begun! But I guess better late than never! I've started a Facebook page and possibly update that more as the response there are almost immediate! But hey....this blog is supposed to be recording part of my creative exploits!<br />

Kolkata, in eastern India to Bangalore in South India after having lived in
Kolkata for nearly 40 years. I have been living in and out of suitcases this
past year and haven’t really been able to sit down to uninterrupted ‘me’ time! So
many changes and with that a lot of excitement, but also a fair share of
challenges! Especially since our home is

talented person, as not only does she quilt, she paints and writes too. I love
her ideas and her use of themes and combination of colours! She is a
perfectionist as you can see from her quilts and I think has a liking for
really complex designs which require precision and accuracy! I really admire
her work. She is a patient and kind teacher and her year long QAL that she is
hosting presently, is encouraging and challenging all of us to take our skills,
as quilters, to another level! Thanks Madhu!</span><o:p></o:p></div>

Ever since I started making the toys for Rafael's mobile, I seem to have got into a very serious crochet mode! It made it so much more urgent to pick up the hook when I found this amazing little wool and needlework store called the Twee Shop, very close to where a Naeeda lives off Sukumvit in Bangkok. Masses of acrylic wool, in every conceivable colour.....and most importantly very reasonable, even more so as there was a sale on! So of course I went to town and now will be carrying back loads of it! It's not soft enough for blankets which you want to cuddle into, but great for throws and afghans and of course cushions and bags and toys...... So the immediate future looks as colorful as my wool!<br />
Have started with an owl cushion...I found the pattern on etsy. <br />

I am here in Bangkok, waiting for Naeeda to have her baby! We spend lots of time at home, or doing things like sorting the babies clothes, or chatting about how I felt when I was pregnant with her and so on! Such a very special and precious time. She wanted animals for a mobile that she has hanging over her baby's cot. She didn't like the commercially made ones....so here are a selection I made. Two in black and white as that's what a baby sees first, and then 2 coloured as she doesn't what her baby to get too stimulated either!!!!!<br />
So hares what I cam up with<br />

Naeeda and David are having their first baby....a boy, in a couple of weeks time. I wanted to make a quilt which could be used as a play mat, since one will never really use a quilt in Bangkok! I have been travelling incessantly and was wondering how I could get it done. My designer daughter Nafisa helped me design it, and actually did the drawing.....So much detail, I groaned, but decided to go ahead and try and make it. <br />
I love applique work, but like doing it by hand best! Since there were only 4 days to get this done, I decided to use the machine to make most of it! Some of the detailing was done by hand of course!<br />
I am really pleased with the result!<br />

I used a mix of paper piecing and applique on this quilt. I have quilted around the fish, shells, the ship and mast and made some waves in the sea. I have purposely kept the quilting simple, as I find too much sewing makes the quilt very stiff!</div>

I am a hand quilter! I really enjoy that....However this was a quilt in a rush, as I am about to miss the deadline to submit for a charity drive. The Desi Quilters are scheduled to make 50 quilts for a charity and hand it over to the charity on Sunday which gave me very little time!<br />

I actually enjoyed the experience. Its fun and quick....and finally used my Bernina to do a little more than just sew straight lines....Fiddled with the machine and got to know her a little better, experimented with some FMQ, which is something I am scared of....so all in all its been a great experience!<br />
Valuable lessons were learnt as well....I find I only want to use Indian hand-loom cotton fabrics or block printed cottons. The challenge here is that most of these fabrics are of different weights, and some quite fine. I find that if the fabric is washed and then starched, ironed and then cut...it works, not easy, as it still shifts around, especially while quilting, but it still works. Much easier to quilt it by hand, as there is much more control....but will continue the experiment!</div>

Here it is....the top of Nikhil's quilt is finally ready. I am glad I have chosen the printed fabric for the borders....the green leaves go well with the theme of jungle animals. Since the majority of the work has been hand done, I will do the quilting by hand as well I think. Still not totally comfortable with FMQ on the machine, but hopefully will gain confidence as I practice! I posted the picture on my 2 quilting FB pages asking for suggestions on how to quilt, and have got lots of ideas....so the next post about Nikhil's quilt should have a picture of it completed!<br />
